Registering a new food trailer in Canada
A new non-CMVSS-compliant trailer under fifteen years old is not eligible for permanent import, and there is no provision to modify a non-compliant vehicle into compliance after it arrives.
Import eligibility
The question is not what it costs to import. It is whether the unit may be imported at all.
Requirements
What the authority requires
| Requirement | Evidence | Read |
|---|---|---|
| A food trailer is a regulated vehicle class under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. A new non-CMVSS-compliant trailer built for a market other than the United States or Mexico and under fifteen years old is not eligible for permanent importation. | verified | 2026-09-04 |
| CBSA D19-12-1 states there is no provision in the Act or the Regulations to modify a non-compliant vehicle into compliance after import. It also cannot be brought in for parts. | verified | 2026-09-04 |
| The approval route is open to a non-manufacturer importer: an importer buying directly from a foreign manufacturer not listed on Appendix G obtains a VIN-specific case-by-case authorisation from Transport Canada, applied for roughly four to six weeks ahead, clearing the border on a Form 1. | verified | 2026-09-04 |
| The trailer must be built to CMVSS and bear a bilingual Canadian compliance label affixed by the original manufacturer, and must be purchased directly at the manufacturing level with acquisition documents proving it. A purchase from a trading company, dealer or retailer disqualifies it entirely. | verified | 2026-09-04 |

How we handle it
The requirement sits at the factory, not at the border. CMVSS certification and the bilingual label are applied at build time by the manufacturer, and neither can be retrofitted.
Confirmed for your configuration
- A compliant build and labelling pathway for your unit
- Case-by-case authorisation timing before shipment
